Angels To Fly

Ed Sheeran is easily the most talented Singer/Songwriter I’ve heard in many years. His soulful voice and knack for wordplay are so striking that his songs have an immediate effect. I’m sure we’ll all be hearing plenty from this 21 year old Brit as his meteoric rise has really just begun. Listen to “The A Team” below.

A Unique Voice

So I was made aware of this 17 year old Brit a few months back, and was immediately interested in someone who may be referencing some roots reggae in their music. I was a little misled by the title of his lead single “The Noose of Jah City”, it is most certainly not a reggae song. What I could hear deep in it is a profound love of the delay soaked dub sound that is a sub-genre only those with a passion for roots would have discovered. King Krule approaches with a much more soulful element to his keys and guitars, and beats that are obviously drawn from golden era hip-hop. What makes this kid noteworthy is his voice. Singing in a gravelly baritone, that seems strange given his age, he purveys a timbre unlike any I have really heard to date. Like many others who have had success before him, it’s less of a classically beautiful voice and more an interesting voice that draws you in. Pair that with the melancholic attitude of Morrissey and you have something worth listening to. It will be really interesting to see if he can expand on this natural gift in the years to come.

He is performing here in the states next week. Check him out live if you can.
